Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging in Cyprus
In Cyprus, the European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive was adopted in 2003, followed by the introduction of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Law. In each subsequent year, changes were made, and the amount of packaging recycled increased until the target of 2023 was reached. All those involved in packaging and business activities must comply with the established rules for packaging management and efficient packaging waste handling.
Who is considered responsible?
All companies, manufacturers, importers, suppliers and sellers, regardless of location or line of business, engaged in producing or selling packaged goods must register with the EPR regulations in Cyprus.
What the Packaging includes
According to the Cypriot legislation, the following main types of packaging are subject to EPR registration.
- Carton
- Metal
- Aluminium
- PET
- HDPE
- Cardboard Liquid Containers
- Other reusable
- Other non reusable
- Corrugated carton
- Plastic
- Wood
- Other
Thresholds
The threshold does not apply. Every company that launches products on the market is obliged to register.
Registration procedure
Registration for compliance with the rules for packaging in Cyprus consists of the following steps.
- Select an approved PRO.
- Provide the necessary statutory documents for the company to be registered.
- Conclude a cooperation agreement.
- Pay the license fee.
- Obtain an EPR number for the company.
- Submit annual reports on the number of packaging released to the market.
Authorized representative
Foreign companies are not required to appoint a representative and can register independently.
Reporting Deadline
A yearly report detailing the quantity of packaging sold in the Cyprus market must be presented to the organization responsible for producers by the end of February 28th.
